A new study finds that proton pump inhibitors could help manage heartburn in patients with chronic heartburn, but they may have little to no effect on their acid reflux symptoms.
A new study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, shows that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are not only effective in relieving the symptoms of acid-related heartburn, but also in preventing the symptoms of GERD, such as heartburn.
PPIs are a class of drugs that are prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). They work by blocking acid production in the stomach.
A recent study on heartburn patients with a long history of heartburn, compared the use of PPIs with placebo for seven years.
"This study was a significant result," said Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, a gastroenterologist at New York-Presbyterian/International. "We wanted to see if we were able to reduce acid reflux symptoms."
PPIs are a type of drug that is used to treat GERD. They work by blocking the production of acid in the stomach.
The studies were conducted by the University of Texas, Austin and the Cleveland Clinic. The study included 18,725 patients with GERD who had symptoms of heartburn.
Patients with heartburn had been taking PPIs for more than eight years, while those with GERD had been taking placebo for five years.
"The studies are encouraging," said Dr. Katlowitz.
The study was the first of its kind, the first to compare the use of PPIs with a placebo for seven years in patients with heartburn who had not received PPIs. They did so by looking at the symptoms and signs of heartburn, along with a questionnaire to examine for comorbidities and other factors associated with GERD.
"There are a number of reasons that patients can benefit from using PPIs, but that doesn't mean they will be able to," Dr. Katlowitz said.
A patient's acid production is reduced by taking PPIs, but the studies did not compare the drug with placebo in patients with GERD, which is the most common type of GERD.
"There are some differences between the two classes of drugs, but that doesn't mean that all of them have the same benefits," said Dr. "We don't know whether they will have a similar effect on heartburn, but we know that they will help a lot of people with GERD. That makes sense for patients who have GERD."
Dr. Katlowitz added that PPIs, such as Protonix, can be used in combination with other drugs, such as Pepcid, Nexium and Zantac.
There are three classes of PPIs:
"The first class, called PPIs, work by blocking the production of acid in the stomach," said Katlowitz. "They work by blocking the production of stomach acid, so they're not as effective as the older drugs."
The second class of PPIs, called acid-suppressing drugs, is also a type of drug used to treat acid reflux disease.
The third class of PPIs, called gastro-resistant drugs, is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
PPIs are not a cure for GERD, but they are known to be helpful for the healing process.
"It's just that once a person has GERD, the healing process is much faster than other people's symptoms," said Dr.
"The PPIs can help with reflux symptoms, but they have a long history of reflux," said Katlowitz.
"That means they are not as effective as the older drugs," said Dr.
